We have seen lots of Bollywood movies that are inspired from Hollywood on both official and unofficial levels. Some movies are pretty good whereas some of them are quite disastrous as compared to their original version. Apparently, big screen is not the only place where we get to witness these adaptations. That’s because small screen is also a part of this remake game. There are bunch of popular TV shows and their Indian adaptations that you might have come across so far.
Lately, we have witnessed exceptional changes in Indian television as makers don’t show any interest in typical saas-bahu rhapsody. But, their new ideas have received inspiration from American or British television series. In this post, I am listing out the popular television shows and their Indian adaptations. Some of these shows were quite popular whereas some of them were just average. Let’s take a look:
- Friends as Hello Friends
Premiered in 1994, Friends is one of the most popular cult classic TV shows that we still love to watch again and again. Few years back, Zee TV, an Indian entertainment channel, came up with the idea of recreating the classic show in Indian version. Unfortunately, the adaptation failed to impress the Indian viewers and lasted for mere 26 episodes. Most of the Friends fans don’t even know about the show and perhaps it’s a good thing. Probably, because we love the original show the way it is.
- 24 as 24
In the category of popular TV shows and their Indian adaptations, 24 is quite well-known. Named after the original series, 24 is the official remake of a popular American crime thriller TV show. There are few changes in Indian adaptations but viewers have shown remarkable interest in this series. Indian counterpart of the show has Anil Kapoor in lead who was also seen in the American version of the show as another character. In addition to this, the American version of the show has 9 successful seasons in its account whereas the Indian adaptation of the show has only 2 series so far.
- The Kumars at No. 42 as Comedy Nights with Kapil
If we have to pick the most popular Indian TV show which itself is an adaptation of another famous television show, then Comedy Nights with Kapil is first name that comes in our mind. Hosted by India’s most popular comedian, Kapil Sharma, the show gained popularity few weeks after the premiere of the show. The show doesn’t completely matches with the Kumars at No. 42 which is the American version of the television series. But we still love it because the show gave us Gutthi. If there will be a survey on popular TV shows and their Indian adaptations that are equally popular, then this show would be at the top for sure.
- Fear Factor as Khatron ke Khiladi
Here is another one from the list of popular tv shows and their Indian adaptations. The show is for action lovers and is by action lovers, Fear Factor is apparently among the most famous reality shows so far. On the other hand, we have Khatron Ke Khiladi which is the Indian adaption of the American reality TV show. Unfortunately, the producers canceled the original show after 6 seasons. Although, it restarted in 2012 and now it is aired on MTV. On the other hand, its Indian adaptation is quite successful and is coming up soon with its 8th season.
- Yo Soy Betty, La fea as Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin
There are several compelling TV shows that producers in different countries have decided to create again and Yo Soy Betty La fea is one of them. The actual version was from Columbia that witnesses the airing during 1999 to 2001. Apart from that, people watched a similar American comedy series Ugly Betty in 2006 and was on air till 2010. After this, they aired a Polish version in 2008 for 2 seasons and the Indian counterpart came into existence as Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin in 2003 and was on air till 2007.
- Everybody Loves Raymond as Sumit Sambhal Lega
Everybody Loves Raymond is an American comedy sitcom released in 1996 and ended in 2005 with 9 outstanding seasons. The show was a big hit in the US. Therefore, entertainers from different countries including Russia, Egypt, Israel, Poland, Britain and India decided to remake the show.
The Indian adaptation of the superhit show released as ‘Sumit Sambhal Lega’ (Sumit will manage) not a long time ago. Apparently, everybody didn’t love Sumit as everybody loves Raymond and therefore the show went off air after its first season. Although, the actors portrayed their respective characters very well and viewers are now requesting for the second season.
You may have seen most of these popular tv shows and may be their Indian adaptations as well. Let me know which show do you like and which remake you think is a fair adaptation of its original counterpart.
