7 Bollywood Movie Sequels That Aren’t As Good As the Originals

The massive success of Bahubali 2 has proved that Bollywood movie sequels have the potential to play it hard at the box office. Not only did it break lots of records but it also became one of the finest movies ever made in India. Although, Bahubali 2 is a bit different as the first installment of the movie was just an introduction of the characters and second installation elaborated the core story.

Usually, when a Bollywood movie performs critically and commercially well, filmmakers announce a second part in order to cash the success of the original movie. Ironically, most of these Hindi movies fail to impress the audience like their predecessor parts. Here is a list of Bollywood movie sequels that aren’t as good as the original movies:

  1. Welcome (2007) & Welcome Back (2015)

Starred in some of the most hilarious flicks including Welcome, Akshay Kumar is regarded as the comedy king of Bollywood. Welcome is a movie where you get to watch the bromance of Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor, and the amazing chemistry between Akshay and Katrina Kaif.

It was a huge success but the second part of the flick couldn’t create the similar magic. The main protagonists are replaced by John Abraham and Shruti Hasan and some new characters are added in order to develop humor. Unfortunately, nothing worked for the movie.

  1. Ishqiya (2010) & Dedh Ishqiya (2014)

Ishqiya (2010) Dedh Ishqiya (2014)

Based on rural Indian background, Ishqiya is the story of two crooks who fall in love with the same woman who is a widow. She let them stay at her home when they both try to woo her. Vidya Balan, Nasiruddin Shah and Arshad delivered impressive performances in the first part but the directors replaced Vidya by Madhuri Dixit in second part with major changes in the story. Critical reviews of dedh Ishqiya were as awful as its box office collection.

  1. Dhamaal (2007) & Double Dhamaal (2011)

Dhamaal is the story of four jobless and homeless boys who embark their journey to Goa to get the money hidden by a don. But, they are chased by a police officer who is also after the money. Even after the absence of an actress, the movie was a big hit.

The second part of the flick represents the extended story of these 5 people and the changes in their lives after the big robbery and donation. Though, it will be unfair to expect a sensible story in a Hindi comedy movie but it actually wasn’t as good as the first part was.

  1. Once Upon A Time in Mumbai (2010) & Once Upon A Time in Mumbai Dobara (2013)

Based on the true story of infamous mobsters, Once Upon a Time in Mumbai is the story of fall of Sultan Mirza and rise of Dawood Ibraahim. The movie tells how Sultan Mirza was betrayed by Shoaib Khan and how he took over Sultan’s empire. The movie is regarded as one of the finest crime based flicks of Bollywood.

The second part of the movie represents the extended story of Shoaib Khan who is married to his girlfriend. Even though, he is married, he falls for a small town girl who wants to be an actress. But, she loves a guy who works for Shoaib Khan. Instead of a real life story, it seems more like a typical Bollywood love triangle. The second installment of the movie was a box office failure.

  1. Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011) & Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 (2013)

Starring the father-son trio Dharmendra, Sunny Deol & Bobby Deol, Yamla Pagla Deewana was a big success on box office. Therefore, its second part was being considered as one of the most awaited Bollywood movie sequels. But apparently, the second part of the movie was nonetheless a disaster with an illogical story line and not-so-funny jokes. They even added a chimp in the movie to make it more interesting but it didn’t work out quite well.

  1. 1920 (2008) & 1920: Evil Returns (2012)

1920 was made in 2008 with new star cast and it turned out to be a surprise success on box office. Indian film industry doesn’t make horror movies frequently but this movie is still regarded as one of the classic horror movies in Hindi cinema. After 4 years, directors came with the second installment with a different star cast. But unlike its previous part, the movie failed to leave an impact on viewers mind and didn’t do quite well commercially.

  1. Kahaani (2012) & Kahaani 2 (2016)

Vidya Ballan is one of the most talented actresses in Indian film industry and Kahaani is remembered as one of the best movies of her career. Kahaani was a suspense thriller that tells the story of a pregnant woman who is searching for her husband. The story is definitely not as simple as it sounds.

After few years, directors brought the second installment of the movie which focused on the issue of child abuse but sadly the formula didn’t work and the movie didn’t perform as good as everyone was expecting. No matter what, we still admire the amazing work by Vidya and can’t wait for her next out-of-the-box flick.

Although, there are several exceptions and Bahubali series is one of them. In fact, Bahubali has turned out to be a game changer in Indian movie industry because of its whopping box office collection. Besides, there are many other Bollywood movie sequels that are in row to get released. Let’s see what these movies have in their boxes for viewers.
